Getting the lumber

The Builds

I am entirely self-taught. Pinterest, blogs, and YouTube tutorials have been my inspiration and instructors for nearly all of my builds around my house. I’ve been slowly accumulating tools and hardware, and getting more and more comfortable with the terminology.

I am in no way a woodworker - some of my finished builds are rough and not necessarily pretty. I’m missing some tools - like a pocket hold jig and even simple tools like clamps. I’ve gotten creative in how I assemble these things…when I can I’ll tell you what I learned and what I wished I had done, but for the most part, I’m pleased with how my builds turned out. People much better and wiser than I can certainly improve on what I created!

My background is in live theater, but I never really built the sets…now, I’m not sure I could get away with getting out of that job!

How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

My fireplace was “classic brick” and although I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it either. So one day I decided to see what other people did with their brick fireplaces and I found two options; cover it with wood paneling, or paint it white. Well, I didn’t like either of those options! Covering it wasn’t possible, and I never understood why white paint was the go-to for a wood fireplace with the smoking and the soot.

Building a Custom Built-In Closet

My master bedroom closet was an anomaly to me. It was large, but awkward. It wasn’t very long, but it was deep and it seemed that the space was not utilized to its fullest potential! And, to top it off, the access to the attic was in this closet, so the closet kits out there wouldn’t work with my space because I didn’t want to block access to the attic!

Creating a Faux Canopy Bed Headboard

My bedroom is, as it should be, a sanctuary. But what my bed was missing was a headboard, so when I perused Pinterest for ideas on DIY headboards, I was planning on building one out of wood, but I saw a drapery one that caught my eye and I decided to try that route. The kicker - I spent $28 to create this headboard/canopy!

Bathroom Remodel

When I first purchased the house, I painted the white walls purple and replaced the oak hardware for silver hooks and a white medicine cabinet. This was in April, 2019. Finally, in September 2020 I got around to finishing the paint job and recovered the floor. Take a look at the transformation!

Putting in a Window (in an existing wall)

This project was something I wanted to do since purchasing the house in November, 2018. So, nearly two years later…I now have natural light in the only bathroom in the house!

How to Build a Dry River Bed

I really wanted to put a dry river bed here - eventually to go up the edge of the lawn as a border - but definitely down in front of the lower garden. I read several blogs about how to do this project (most claiming to do one in a weekend!), but I knew I would have to end up doing it my way…the way I always do it…on the fly!

DIY Hammock Stand

I have always loved hammocks - I love the sideways sway! When I purchased a new hammock, my existing stand didn’t fit it, so I got to work searching Pinterest for DIY Hammock Stands! I built this one for under $60

Build a Backyard Fire Pit

I wanted to create a fire pit in my backyard that was a little more permanent than my little one from Walmart, but the wind that whips through my yard in the afternoons was deterring my build. I wanted something more than just a simple ring - I wanted some kind of wind breaker as well! Here’s how I built a tall-back fire pit for just over $100! (If I had only wanted to do the ring, this pit would have cost just under $70!)

Becoming a Chicken Farmer

I’ve kind of always wanted chickens, but the initial start up cost was a deterrent. So when some dear friends had to find a new home for their chickens, and were also generously giving their coop and supplies, I gladly took on the mantle!
