Matilda Magic
Matilda, the Musical has been my largest show to date, blowing all others out of the water with the number of cues! Matilda clocked in at 280 cues (the previous record being 175). For some companies, this may not seem like a lot, but for our little space, it was an undertaking for our light operator!
There is an advantage to performing with tracks; the music will always be the same, at the same tempo, and notes will be exactly where they should be. This made programming this show simpler (I would have had more cues had we had to manually fire the cue to words; instead, I was able to create multiple chases that would fire at a certain word or beat and then was timed with the music to pulse and dance with the actors). Some numbers that used this extensively was “Bruce”, “Naughty”, “Loud”, and “Revolting Children”.
I also used no colors for any scenes in the school - UNTIL “Revolting Children” when they kids brought life to their classroom. For the Wormwood residence, I chose colors that were gaudy and clashed. Miss Honey’s scenes were soft and yellow and warm. We used color to help convey the emotion of the scene.
This production of Matilda, the Musical was performed at the Evergreen Playhouse in March, 2025.
