Lighting the Park
This was my first time working at South Puget Sound Community College on their main stage for their production of Sunday in the Park with George. This was also my first time with Qlab and projections and learning how to balance the stage so that we could see the action AND the projection screens was a fun challenge.
For park scenes, as George paints his piece, the stage got brighter and more lush as Act 1 progressed. In a sense, I “painted” the stage along with George. At the end of Act 1 when George has finished his masterpiece, it is fully lit as the actors take their place in the painting.
For Act 2, as most of the act takes place in a gallery or presentation, I kept things stark. For the gallery, I wanted to give the illusion of “mini spotlights” on pieces of art during the reception. For the presentation and the introduction of the chromolume, I solo spotted the two actors with the chromolume in the center. For its “show” we partnered with the projectionist and along with her projections, I included moving lights on the stage floor as well as moving lights INSIDE of the dome of the device - holes cut into the sphere let the disco light out so it radiated in all levels.
This production of Sunday in the Park with George was performed at South Puget Sound Community College in May, 2023.
